A Letter to Fire Chiefs, Department Leaders, and Firefighters:
Carey S. Johnston & John E. Hutton III
Every firefighter understands the visible dangers of the job. Fire, extreme heat, structural collapse, hazardous materials, smoke, toxic fumes and unpredictable emergency scenes are risks you train to confront every day. But some of the most serious threats to a firefighter’s life are the ones that cannot be seen.
Interceptor Health was created specifically to address those hidden threats. Our mission is to provide advanced health testing, screening, education, and ongoing monitoring designed around the unique occupational risks faced by firefighters—particularly cardiovascular disease and occupationally related cancers. Firefighting places extraordinary demands on the cardiovascular system. Extreme heat, heavy protective equipment, intense physical exertion, adrenaline surges, disrupted sleep, dehydration, and repeated occupational exposures can create a combination of risk factors unlike those faced by most professions. At the same time, firefighters encounter smoke, soot, diesel exhaust, combustion byproducts, PFAS, and other potentially hazardous substances throughout their careers. These occupational exposures make proactive cancer-risk assessment and appropriate early-detection strategies especially important. Interceptor Health believes firefighter healthcare should reflect the realities of the profession. Our program goes beyond a conventional annual examination by offering firefighter-focused diagnostics that may include advanced cardiovascular blood testing, cardiac imaging, cancer-risk screening, metabolic and inflammatory markers, behavioral-health assessment, and other clinically appropriate testing based on individual risk.
Our objective is straightforward: Find potential problems earlier—before they become emergencies. Interceptor Health does not seek to replace your department’s occupational medical examination. Instead, our program is designed to supplement it with deeper diagnostic capabilities and longitudinal monitoring focused on the health risks associated with a career in the fire service. We also understand that an effective firefighter health program must work within the operational realities of a fire department. That is why Interceptor Health offers mobile, on-site screening designed around shift schedules and station operations. Our goal is to bring advanced diagnostics to firefighters rather than unnecessarily taking firefighters away from their crews and communities. Just as importantly, screening does not end when the testing is complete. Results are reviewed by clinicians and discussed directly with the firefighter. When a finding requires additional evaluation, the firefighter receives guidance regarding appropriate next steps and referral coordination.
Confidentiality is fundamental to our approach. Individual medical results remain between the firefighter and the clinical team, helping firefighters seek appropriate screening and care with confidence. For fire chiefs and department leaders, investing in firefighter health is about more than meeting an annual requirement. It is about building a culture of prevention, early detection, education, and long-term health monitoring.
For firefighters, it is about protecting the person behind the gear. You spend your careers protecting other people on their worst days. We believe you deserve a healthcare program built specifically to protect you. We invite chiefs, department leadership, firefighters, associations, and wellness coordinators to learn more about bringing Interceptor Health screening to your department.
Early detection. Clinical education. Routine monitoring.
Those principles are at the center of everything we do.
